Constraining Slats to 2 Surfaces

User Question:  “Zach, I am trying to build a similar form to the “Slats and Continuous Slices” example, but am having a little trouble constraining the top of the adaptive component. If you look at the images at the beginning of your video, you will see the form at the top is continuous, while the base is dynamic. I've tried constraining using different methods including reference planes, reference lines, additional adaptive components, and formulas, but it keeps breaking.”

This question came up a couple times.   The trick is just that you make another corresponding set of points for another divided top surface.  It’s actually significantly easier than the original example.

  6. Thanks for the great video. I am having trouble with one aspect, however.
    The nodes on the bottom surface are not aligned with the nodes on the top surface, so when I place the adaptive component, the planes are warped.
    Is there a step I am missing to get the nodes aligned on the top and bottom surfaces?

  7. Hi Justin
    There are a couple ways to get the top an bottom nodes to line up. The easiest in this case is setting the "belt measurement" parameter on the bottom surface to measure the division distribution from the sides rather than the middle (default). This means that the curvy surface will measure out a 20 x 5 division along the same linear lengths as the flat surface above it. Another method would be to use the division by intersects functionality that I'm showing in this post: http://buildz.blogspot.com/2012/10/intro-to-repeat-intersects-and-adaptive.html

    I got the problem fixed!
    It seems that I needed to set the belt measurement to 0. But I also messed up when creating the bottom wavy surface. I didn't have all extents aligned with the top surface, so that when you look at it in plan, the two surfaces you create have the same size (extents).

    Once I fixed those two things, it seems to be working great.
