Constraining Slats to 2 Surfaces

banq
User Question:  “Zach, I am trying to build a similar form to the “Slats and Continuous Slices” example, but am having a little trouble constraining the top of the adaptive component. If you look at the images at the beginning of your video, you will see the form at the top is continuous, while the base is dynamic. I've tried constraining using different methods including reference planes, reference lines, additional adaptive components, and formulas, but it keeps breaking.”

This question came up a couple times.   The trick is just that you make another corresponding set of points for another divided top surface.  It’s actually significantly easier than the original example.

  1. Hi Zack. Do you think this is possible in Revit 2012?

  2. Sure, but you would need to manually place all of the slates rather than automagically repeating them

  3. Works Great... Thanks Zach! You the man.

  4. Hi Zach, are you going to give any class on AU Virtual this year?

My proposal for a parametric revit class has been rejected, really disappointed. Perhaps I should start a blog like yours instead of waiting until the next AU. :(

  5. hi zach, my name is Luigi and I follow this blog shortly but I think it's very interesting. I have a question: how can I give depth profiles? I did several tests but I could not do this. thanks.

  6. Thanks for the great video. I am having trouble with one aspect, however.
The nodes on the bottom surface are not aligned with the nodes on the top surface, so when I place the adaptive component, the planes are warped.
Is there a step I am missing to get the nodes aligned on the top and bottom surfaces?
    Thanks.

  7. Hi Justin
There are a couple ways to get the top an bottom nodes to line up. The easiest in this case is setting the "belt measurement" parameter on the bottom surface to measure the division distribution from the sides rather than the middle (default). This means that the curvy surface will measure out a 20 x 5 division along the same linear lengths as the flat surface above it. Another method would be to use the division by intersects functionality that I'm showing in this post: http://buildz.blogspot.com/2012/10/intro-to-repeat-intersects-and-adaptive.html

  8. Hey Zack. I know many people just learn from your stuff and go around without even putting a single thank you note. It takes a great mind to make these stuff but a great person to share these. Thanks a ton for helping others.

  9. Thanks for the quick response, Zach.
    I got the problem fixed!
It seems that I needed to set the belt measurement to 0. But I also messed up when creating the bottom wavy surface. I didn't have all extents aligned with the top surface, so that when you look at it in plan, the two surfaces you create have the same size (extents).

Once I fixed those two things, it seems to be working great.
Thanks again for the great tutorials.

  10. Hi Zach,

I'm trying to create this but with adaptive point so that i can edit the slats once there made, however, I keep getting a 'there is only one component in this repeater error' any help?#

    Thanks :)
